Custom LED lines for the new passenger passage at Eindhoven Station
The number of travelers in Eindhoven station is growing and continues to grow. So much that an extensive renovation was necessary. It was important that the authenticity of the station was preserved. As a national monument, Eindhoven station is an important document of the architectural style in the reconstruction period after the Second World War (1956). The new passenger passage is now a fact. Zirqle provided the new station passage with innovative LED line lighting.
Twice as many travelers
From the outside of the station it is not visible that a considerable extra space has been realized. The extension has been fully realized within the original buildings of the station: in the form of a 13-meter-wide passenger passage. This new passage ensures that Eindhoven station can receive twice as many travelers. The passage contains all facilities for passers-by.
LED line lighting with invisible hotspots
Zirqle has come up with this innovative solution together with architectural firm Arcadis. It was decided to optimally illuminate the passage with LED line lighting. Due to the presence of a lowered track body, it was not possible to work with traditional LED luminaires. In consultation with the architect, a custom solution was chosen: functional LED line lighting without visible hotspots, but with sufficient light output. Five LED lines with a length of no less than 20 meters have been incorporated into the rigitone ceiling of the passage. The LED linear lighting provides functional light in the public space and gives the passage a modern look. Because Zirqle only had a small installation depth at its disposal, the LED lines are equipped with 240 high lumen LEDs per meter. This was necessary to make the LED line completely diffuse and to meet the required LUX value per square meter. Polycarbonate lens caps have been used. This material spreads the light evenly and is also fireproof. Very important in a large public space.
Glass roof with LED lighting
On the north and south sides, the passenger passage is fitted with large glass louvres in the ceiling. A total of 36 slats have been installed with a length of seven meters per slat. The LED linear lighting is placed in recesses in the slats that are only seven millimeters deep. It was therefore quite a challenge to design a functional LED line lighting that met all requirements. But the result is impressive: diffused light, sufficient light output and an innovative look. The combination of the glass roof with the LED lines is pleasant for travelers and gives an extra dimension to the passage.
Distance between LED hardware and line lighting
The LED hardware is placed in a specially equipped technical room at no less than 80 meters away from the LED line lighting. Need for various technical reasons. High-efficiency LuxaLight LED drivers were chosen to be able to absorb the voltage drop. The drivers also ensure that the station can set the LED lines to the same brightness, while maintaining the current protocol.
Used components:
- Voltage Driver LuxaLight 5 channel 20 Amp for voltage drop compensation
- LED Power Supply Mean Well Open Frame, 24 Volt 125A 3000 Watt
- LuxaLight Long Life LED-strip Warm White 2500K Protected (24 Volt, 140 LEDs, 2835, IP64)
